Your Roomba’s “charging error 8” status indicates a problem with the device’s battery or charging system known as a “communication fault”. Put simply your vacuum is not getting a proper signal from the charger when it docks.
To fix this issue, you can try the following steps:
Check and Clean Connections
- Ensure the battery is properly inserted and seated securely in the Roomba
- Clean the battery contacts and the contacts in the Roomba to remove any dust and debris
- Inspect the charging dock for visible damage or dirt on the contacts
- Clean the charging contacts on both the dock and the Roomba to ensure a proper connection
Reset the Roomba

- Remove the battery from the Roomba
- Hold down the power button for 20 seconds
- Re-insert the battery and attempt to charge it again
If that doesn’t work, you can try this reset procedure:
- While the Roomba is connected to the charger, hold the spot/target button and the dock/home button simultaneously for about 10 seconds until you hear a sound
Battery Troubleshooting
- If the error continues, consider replacing the battery with a new, authentic iRobot lithium-ion battery
- Ensure the Roomba is being charged at room temperature
Additional Tips
- Try lifting the Roomba from the charging station when the error occurs and reseat it multiple times
- If the Roomba has been unused for a long time, try leaving it on the charger for an extended period for the first charge.
- Run the Roomba until the battery is completely depleted, then recharge it. Repeat this process a few times if necessary
